Brewers aim to reclaim first place in division
Aug 2, 2007 - 2:00 PM NY Mets (60-47) at Milwaukee (58-50) 2:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- After seeing their lead in the National League Central Division evaporate, the Milwaukee Brewers look to begin turning things around against the top team in the league.
The slumping Brewers aim to reclaim first place in the division Thursday when they host the New York Mets in the finale of a three-game series.
Milwaukee owned a comfortable 8 1/2-game cushion in the division on June 23, but the Chicago Cubs (57-49) have won 25 of their last 35 games and pulled percentage points ahead of the Brewers thanks to Wednesday's 5-4 victory.
One day after rallying for a thrilling 4-2 triumph in the series opener, Milwaukee dropped an 8-5 decision Wednesday. Prince Fielder blasted his league-leading 31st home run for the Brewers, who have lost six of their last eight games.
On Thursday, Milwaukee gives the ball to Chris Capuano (5-7, 4.70 ERA), who has dropped seven straight decisions. The lefthander has not won since May 7, a string of 12 consecutive outings.
Capuano lasted just four innings and yielded four runs and seven hits in his only other start against the Mets this season, a 9-1 loss at Shea Stadium on May 13.
New York counters with Brian Lawrence (NR), who will be making his first appearance in the majors since the 2005 season. The righthander underwent shoulder surgery in March 2006.
The Mets have won 11 of their last 18 games and own the top record in the National League.
