Werth drives in four as Phillies top Cubs
Aug 2, 2007 - 11:51 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- It wasn't the debut Kyle Lohse was hoping for, but his new teammates won anyway.Jason Werth drove in four runs and Pat Burrell went 3-for-4 with a solo home run as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs, 10-6, on Thursday to salvage a split in the four-game series.
Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds just prior to Tuesday's trade deadline, Lohse left his Phillies debut after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Jacque Jones in the first inning. Diagnosed with a right forearm contusion, Lohse was removed in the second inning after allowing one run and two hits in his one inning before departing.
"I tried to talk (pitching coach Rick Dubee) into staying in the game," Lohse said. "My arm started to swell up like a golf ball so I knew I had to come out. It's all muscle so I don't think I will need an MRI."
With their starter sidelined, Philadelphia's lineup gave replacement J.D. Durbin (4-2) a comfortable cushion, though the righthander and the Phillies bullpen nearly gave it all back.
"I felt good in the pen even though it was a hurry up type situation," Durbin said. "It wasn't pretty but it ended up working out OK."
Highlighted by Burrell's 15th home run of the season and a pair of RBI hits from Werth, the Phillies tallied three runs in the second inning off starter Sean Marshall (5-5) and added three more in the third to build a 7-1 lead.
"I thought I hit the ball pretty well but I think I got some help from the wind," Burrell said.
Marshall's rough outing followed a string of four starts in which he surrendered only six earned runs in 23 1/3 innings. The lefthander lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs, nine hits and one walk while striking out two.
"(Marshall) was getting the ball up some," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "Usually when Sean is throwing the ball well he is down with his pitches. I know he scratched his cornea last night while he was sleeping, I don't know that had anything to do with his outing but it might have."
The Cubs started chipping away at the lead in the third on Chris Coste's two-run single. Derrek Lee added an RBI single in the fourth and Matt Murton's run scoring base hit off Geoff Geary in the fifth trimmed the deficit to 7-5.
"It was an offensive game. We had men on base but we left them out there," said Lee, referencing the fact that the team left 11 runners on base.
Durbin departed after the fourth inning, having allowed three runs, five hits and one walk while striking out one in three innings.
Ryan Theriot made it a one-run game with an RBI single in the eighth and the Cubs threatened for more, getting runners to first and second with two outs, but Tom Gordon induced a flyout from Mark DeRosa to end the inning.
"The bullpen gutted it out today," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "I might have lost both (Brett Myers and Gordon) for tomorrow because I had Myers heating up in the eighth."
Keyed by a two-run double from Werth and a run-scoring double by Carlos Ruiz, the Phillies extended their lead to 10-6 in the ninth as they got the better of reliever Will Ohman.
"We didn't need a short outing today, that's for sure," Piniella said. "Our bullpen did a great job, but we have to start getting more innings from our starters."
Alfonso Soriano had three hits and two runs for the Cubs, who remain in a virtual tie for first in the National League Central as a result of the Milwaukee Brewers 12-4 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday.
