Nationals look to stay hot vs. Cardinals
Aug 3, 2007 - 3:06 PM St Louis (50-58) at Washington (48-60) 7:05 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) - The lowly Washington Nationals have proven to be a tough team to beat lately.
Tim Redding (1-2, 2.64 ERA) takes the mound as the Nationals try for their season-high tying fourth straight win in the opener of a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.
Ryan Zimmerman drove in three runs and Ronnie Belliard scored three times as Washington cruised to its fifth straight home win, 7-3, over Cincinnati on Thursday.
Redding, who has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his first five starts, will try and keep the Nationals rolling.
Redding is winless in his last three outings despite allowing just four runs in his last 19 2/3 innings. On Saturday Redding held New York to one run and five hits in six innings in a 3-1 loss.
As for St. Louis, it turns to Kip Wells (4-13, 5.72) to stop a two-game skid. The Cardinals fell, 5-4, to Pittsburgh in 11 innings and went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Wells will try and avoid becoming the major's first 14-game loser. In his last outing the righthander yielded five runs and 11 hits in five innings but received a no-decision in a 9-5 win over Milwaukee on Sunday.
