Brewers, Phillies look to gain ground in division races

Aug 3, 2007 - 3:16 PM Philadelphia (57-51) at Milwaukee (58-51) 8:05 pm EDT

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers are in the midst of tight division races. Both teams will try to take a step forward when they meet at Miller Park on Friday.

The Brewers sit percentage points behind the Chicago Cubs (57-50) in the National League Central after surrendering an 8 1/2 game lead they held on June 23. The bullpen has been a big point of concern for Milwaukee, carrying a 5.69 ERA and having blown five saves since the All-Star break.

After watching reliever Carlos Villanueva surrender three runs in the seventh inning against the New York Mets on Thursday, Brewers manager Ned Yost and catcher Johnny Estrada engaged in a heated exchange in the dugout before being separated.

The Phillies are moving in the opposite direction, having won 10 of their last 13 games to pull within four games of the Mets (61-47) in the NL East.

Philadelphia will hand the ball to rookie starter Kyle Kendrick (5-1, 4.01 ERA). The 22-year-old righthander picked up a win last Sunday against the Pirates, yielding one run and six hits in seven frames.

Milwaukee will counter with its own promising rookie, Yovani Gallardo (3-1, 2.72). The 21-year-old righthander had a string of four straight appearances allowing one run or less snapped on Sunday when he surrendered four runs in 5 1/3 innings at St. Louis in a no decision.
