Lefthanders matchup as Devil Rays face Orioles
Aug 4, 2007 - 1:18 PM Baltimore (51-57) at Tampa Bay (41-67) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- In what has largely been a lost season for both the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, a few positives have emerged on each side.
Two of those bright spots face off against each other when the Devil Rays host the Orioles on Saturday.
Scott Kazmir (7-7, 3.85 ERA) takes the hill for the home team looking to build upon his last four starts, during which he has posted a 2-1 record with a 1.40 ERA. Command has been as issue all season for the 23-year-old lefthander, who ranks third in the American League with 67 walks, but he issued just one free pass while tossing six scoreless frames against the Boston Red Sox last Sunday.
Baltimore will counter with rookie Brian Burres (5-4, 4.12). The converted reliever has bounced back and forth between the bullpen and the rotation this season, but has been solid enough to earn himself a prominent role in the Orioles' future.
The 26-year-old lefthander earned a win last Saturday when he held the powerful New York Yankees to one run and six hits in six innings.
Baltimore took the series opener on Friday, 3-1, on the strength of a three-run homer in the seventh inning by former Devil Rays slugger Aubrey Huff.
