Baker, Twins aim for series win over divison rival Indians

Aug 5, 2007 - 3:59 PM Cleveland (61-47) at Minnesota (56-53) 2:10 pm EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Matt Garza is the Minnesota Twins' prized prospect, but lately Scott Baker has been stealing the spotlight.

Baker takes the mound against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday as the Twins look to take the rubber game of the three-game series.

The Twins' first-round pick in 2005, Garza, 23, lasted just four innings in Saturday's 3-2 win. The bullpen bailed him out, throwing five scoreless innings and Michael Cuddyer drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth as Minnesota beat Cleveland for the first time in five tries here.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Baker (5-4, 4.88 ERA) is coming off his best start of the season. The righthander held Kansas City to one run and two hits over eight innings in a 3-1 win on Tuesday. He has allowed three runs or less in six of his last eight starts.

Baker will be opposed by an equally hot pitcher, Fausto Carmona. Carmona (13-5, 3.27) is 5-1 with a 1.74 ERA in his last six starts. However, that one loss came on Tuesday against Texas as he allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits in seven innings in a 3-1 setback.

With Saturday's win, the Twins climbed within 5 1/2 games of Cleveland in the American League Central. Detroit is one-half game behind Cleveland.
