Zimmerman, Nationals go for sixth straight win

Aug 5, 2007 - 3:14 PM St Louis (50-57) at Washington (50-60) 1:35 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Ryan Zimmerman will try to build off his first multi-home run performance as the Washington Nationals look to extend their season-long five-game winning streak when they host the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Zimmerman blasted two home runs, including a two-run shot during a five-run sixth inning, in Washington's 12-1 triumph over St. Louis on Saturday. The 22-year-old third baseman, who has driven in 10 runs over his last five games, is batting .270 with 17 home runs and 60 RBI on the season.

Behind the power of Zimmerman, the Nationals posted five straight wins for the first time this season. They had two previous winning streaks of four stopped earlier this year.

Matt Chico (5-6, 4.73 ERA) will take the mound for Washington, which has gone 14-8 since the All-Star break. The 24-year-old lefthander yielded two runs and nine hits with four strikeouts in five innings of a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

He will be opposed by Adam Wainwright (10-8, 4.38), who has won four of his past five starts for the Cardinals. The righthander pitched six solid frames in a 6-4 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, allowing two runs and eight hits with three strikeouts.

That outing was St. Louis' last victory, having lost four straight by a combined score of 35-8.
