Bonds, Giants move past 756
Aug 8, 2007 - 2:16 PM Washington (52-61) at San Francisco (48-63), 10:15 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - The San Francisco Giants have been swept up in Barry Bonds' pursuit of Hank Aaron's all-time home run record for so long that they'll have to remember how to play without the spector of history hanging over all their heads.
They will begin the process on Wednesday when they host the Washington Nationals in the third game of a four-game series.
Bonds clubbed career home run No. 756 on Tuesday night, driving Mike Bacsik's 3-2 fastball out of the park in the fifth inning to become baseball's all-time home run king. Lost amid the shuffle, however, was the fact that Washington scored a come-from-behind win.
The victory made the Nationals - 9-25 on May 10 - 43-36 over the past few months and kept alive the possibility that the team might have enough left to get back to .500 before the end of the season.
Starting for Washington will be journeyman righthander Tim Redding (1-2, 2.43 ERA). The 29-year-old is playing for his fourth organization in the last four years and has been strong thus far for the Nationals, allowing a total of two earned runs over his past three starts.
The Giants will counter with youngster Matt Cain (3-12, 3.93). The 22-year-old righthander has been the victim of horrible run support all season, with San Francisco averaging just 3.18 runs per game when Cain takes the ball.
