Rangers, Devil Rays begin three-game set

ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) - After salvaging a split with the reigning American League champions, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays begin a three-game series with the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Friday.

With both teams stuck in last place, this weekend's series is more about player development and draft position than anything else. Texas was active at the July 31 trading deadline, picking up a handful of promising prospects and thrusting the franchise into full rebuilding mode.

Since then, top prospect Jason Botts has been taking most of the at-bats at designated hitter and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who came over from Atlanta as part of the Mark Teixeira trade, has been splitting his time between first base and catcher.

Starting for the Rangers will be first-year starter Brandon McCarthy (5-8, 5.04). The 24-year-old righthander has been sharp recently, allowing three earned runs or less in his past six outings, although he has only one win to show for his efforts over that span.

He picked up a win over the Devil Rays on April 9, allowing two runs and five hits over six innings.

Tampa Bay, which has been in a constant rebuilding mode throughout the franchise's 10-year history, will hand the ball to rookie Andy Sonnanstine (1-7, 6.12). The 24-year-old righthander has not won since June 10, a span of 10 starts.
