Mariners look to bounce back against White Sox
Aug 11, 2007 - 1:09 PM Seattle (63-50) at Chi White Sox (54-61) 7:05 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners will be trying to improve their playoff positioning when they visit the Chicago White Sox in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday.
The White Sox earned a 5-3 win in the series opener on Friday behind a pair of homers from rookie third baseman Josh Fields and yet another perfect ninth inning from closer Bobby Jenks.
Jenks has retired 38 straight batters, tying David Wells' American League record set in 1998. Jim Barr holds the major league record, retiring 41 straight batters for San Francisco in 1972.
Friday's loss dropped the Mariners back into a virtual tie for first place in the wild card race with the New York Yankees (64-51). Miguel Batista (11-8, 4.17 ERA) will start for Seattle on Saturday. The veteran righthander suffered a loss last Sunday to Boston, allowing three runs - two earned - and five hits in six innings.
He earned a win against Chicago on May 2, yielding two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Batista owns a 1-1 career mark with one save and a 2.84 ERA in eight appearances - five starts - against the White Sox.
Chicago will counter with Gavin Floyd (1-1, 7.08). The 24-year-old righthander picked up his first win of the season last Sunday at Detroit, surrendering seven hits in six scoreless frames.
