All-Star righthanders square off in Detroit

DETROIT (Ticker) -- A pair of All-Stars square off when Dan Haren and the Oakland Athletics face Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

After both hurlers were teammates in the Midsummer Classic, the duo faced off on July 31 in Oakland, with Haren (13-3, 2.46 ERA) getting the best of Verlander (11-4, 3.60)

Since the All-Star break, Haren has continued his strong first half, going 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA. Verlander has hit the skids, going 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA.

Haren is 1-2 with a 4.78 ERA in four lifetime starts against the Tigers.

Verlander is 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA in four career starts vs. Oakland. He will be aiming to halt a stretch that has seen the Tigers pitch to a 6.74 ERA over the last 21 contests.

In a slugfest on Friday, Jack Cust belted a grand slam and knocked in seven runs to power Oakland to a 16-10 win.

The reeling Tigers, who have lost 11 of their last 14 games, have fallen 1 1/2 games back of Cleveland in the American League Central Division.
