Wells looking to lift Blue Jays to third straight win
Aug 11, 2007 - 4:14 PM Toronto (58-56) at Kansas City (50-64) 7:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - Vernon Wells hopes his recent success continues as the Toronto Blue Jays go for their third straight win when they continue a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
Wells has driven in runs in seven of his last nine games, batting .325 (13-for-40) with 12 RBI over that stretch. The 28-year-old center fielder has posted a .263 batting average with 14 homers and 66 RBI this season.
The Blue Jays will send Dustin McGowan (8-5, 4.11 ERA) to the mound. The 25-year-old righthander hurled eight innings, yielding one run and eight hits with six strikeouts in a 4-1 triumph over the Texas Rangers on Sunday.
McGowan will be looking to follow up a strong performance by Shaun Marcum, who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Friday, leading Toronto to a 2-1 win.
He will be opposed by Leo Nunez (1-0, 1.93), who is making just his third career start. The 23-year-old Dominican pitched four innings of relief, surrendering two runs on two hits and two walks in Monday's 8-5 loss to the New York Yankees.
In Nunez's last start, he pitched six strong innings, allowing just three hits and one walk in a 10-0 triumph over the Rangers on July 29.
