With milestone aside, Glavine looks to stop Mets two-game skid

Aug 11, 2007 - 2:30 PM Florida(54-62) at NY Mets (64-51) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Mets need a vintage performance out of newly crowned 300-game winner Tom Glavine.

Glavine takes the mound against the Florida Marlins on Saturday looking to help the Mets overcome a pair of disheartening losses.

Carlos Beltran returned from the disabled list on Friday and hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning, but closer Billy Wagner surrendered a two-run double to Hanley Ramirez in the ninth for a 4-3 loss for the Mets. It was just Wagner's second blown save of the season and first in nearly two months.

Couple that loss with Thursday's 7-6 setback to the Atlanta Braves in which Carlos Delgado was robbed of a game-tying homer in the ninth, and New York is reeling. The Mets saw their lead over the Philadelphia Phillies (61-54) in the National League East cut to three games.

Now New York turns to Glavine (10-6, 4.31 ERA) to be the stopper.

The 41-year-old lefthander made history on Sunday as he beat the Chicago Cubs to become the 23rd pitcher in history to win 300 games. The future Hall of Famer allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings in an 8-3 win.

Glavine, who has yet to face the Marlins this season, has allowed three runs or less in five of his last six starts.

The veteran lefthander will be opposed by Scott Olsen (9-9, 5.43), who won for the first time in three starts his last time out. The 23-year-old Olsen beat the Houston Astros on Sunday, allowing three runs and six hits with eight strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of a 6-5 win.
