Peavy puts impressive streaks on line in series finale
Aug 12, 2007 - 1:52 PM San Diego (62-54) at Cincinnati (50-66) 1:15 pm EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) - Jake Peavy continues his push for his first National League Cy Young Award on Sunday when the San Diego Padres face the Cincinnati Reds.
Jake Peavy (12-5, 2.21 ERA), who leads the National League with 159 strikeouts and is second in the majors in ERA behind teammate Chris Young (2.02), has been almost untouchable on the road as he is unbeaten (6-0) with a major league-best 0.89 ERA away from Petco Park.
Almost as impressive is the two-time All-Star's marks against Cincinnati, as the righthander is 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA in seven starts against the Reds - all Padres victories. Just as notable is that Peavy has won each of his last three turns and is on a 19-inning scoreless streak after allowing a first-inning to Houston on July 27.
The latest contribution to that stretch was in Tuesday's 4-0 victory over St. Louis in which Peavy gave up three hits in six innings.
Cincinnati counters with Bronson Arroyo (5-12, 4.51), who has fared very well at hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park since the start of July. He is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his last four home starts while walking four and striking out 19 as opposed to an 0-3 mark with a 5.83 ERA in four outings on the road.
The righthander extended his home success with Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed six hits and no walks with five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Arroyo is 2-3 with a 3.49 ERA in five starts vs. San Diego.
