Ordonez aims to carry Tigers in finale vs. A's

DETROIT (Ticker) - Now that the Detroit Tigers are back atop the American League Central, Magglio Ordonez would like to keep it that way.

The Tigers try to finish their four-game series against the Oakland Athletics on a positive note in the finale on Monday.

Ordonez belted a pair of home runs during an eight-run second inning as the Tigers posted an 11-6 victory Sunday. He became the first Tiger to hit two homers in an inning since Hall of Famer Al Kaline in 1955.

The 33-year-old All-Star leads the majors with a .357 batting average and also has driven in 100 RBI for the second consecutive season.

After dropping the series opener, the Tigers have won two straight. They have not put together three straight wins since a four-game run from July 15-19.

Detroit owns an one-half game edge over Cleveland (65-53) in the AL Central.

Detroit's Chad Durbin (7-4, 4.44 ERA) for the Tigers. The righthander lost to Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings for his first setback since June 14.

Chad Gaudin (8-8, 4.18) counters for Oakland, which is 3-3 on its seven-game road trip that concludes with this contest.

Gaudin has fallen off after a fast start, going 0-5 in his last six starts. He was tagged for seven runs over five innings in an 8-6 loss to Texas on Tuesday.

The righthander will be making his first career start against Detroit, which has only managed one runs through seven innings of relief off Gaudin.
