Bonds to be honored but likely to rest in doubleheader
Aug 13, 2007 - 1:33 PM San Francisco (49-67) at Pittsburgh (48-66) 5:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- As baseball's newest home run king, Barry Bonds will take the opportunity to enjoy the place where it all started Monday when the San Francisco Giants visit the Pittsburgh Pirates in a doubleheader.
A seven-time National League MVP, Bonds slugged his 758th career homer against the Pirates on Friday.
But it was hardly enough, as Pittsburgh outscored San Francisco at AT&T Park over the weekend, 26-10, in taking all three games from the Giants.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday that the 43-year-old Bonds probably will not start either game in Pittsburgh, even though the Pirates have planned a tribute to their former superstar.
Paul Maholm (7-14, 4.59 ERA), who has lost two straight starts, gets the nod in the opener for Pittsburgh. Maholm will try to avoid the dubious distinction of becoming the NL's first 15-game loser, a mark that would tie him with Chicago White Sox righthander Jose Contreras.
Maholm suffered his 14th loss in a 10-6 setback on Wednesday, surrendering six runs - four earned - and seven hits with four walks in five innings.
Matt Cain (4-12, 3.77) will take the mound for the Giants and look to repeat a fine performance in his last turn on Wednesday, when he allowed just three hits over six innings in a 5-0 win over the Nationals.
