Young, Padres look for third straight win

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- A night after Greg Maddux kicked off another shutout win for the San Diego Padres, major league ERA leader Chris Young will take the mound when the team continues a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

Maddux and three relievers combined to allow nine hits in an 8-0 victory on Tuesday, marking the Padres' major league-leading 17th shutout.

The Rockies will have an even tougher test with Young (9-4, 2.02 ERA), who owns a 4-0 record with a 2.52 ERA in seven career starts against Colorado. The 6-10 righthander is coming off his worse start since April, allowing four runs in six innings to take a loss at the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-0, on Thursday.

Young and the Padres will be looking to shave another game off the Arizona Diamondbacks' (67-53) lead in the National League West, which currently sits at two games.

The Rockies will counter with rookie Ubaldo Jimenez (1-2, 6.57). The hard-throwing righthander has lost his last two starts, allowing a total of 15 runs - 11 earned - in 6 2/3 innings.

He made a start against the Padres on July 24, yielding three runs and four hits, but did not factor in the 5-3 loss.

With Tuesday's setback, the Rockies remained five games behind the Diamondbacks in the West.
