Angels hope to avoid sweep against Blue Jays
Aug 16, 2007 - 1:27 PM LA Angels (69-49) at Toronto (61-58) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hope to salvage the finale of a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.
Anaheim owns the major's best home record at 40-17, but struggles away from Angel Stadium, falling to 29-32 on the road after Wednesday's 2-1 setback.
The Blue Jays have held the Angels' bats in check in the first two games of the series, with veteran Roy Halladay pitching a complete-game five-hitter on Tuesday and Shaun Marcum going seven strong frames on Wednesday to notch his 10th win of the season.
Dustin McGowan (8-6, 4.12 ERA) will try to match his teammates on Thursday. The 25-year-old righthander is getting his first extended look at the major league-level this season and has impressed the Toronto brass by allowing three earned runs or less in 11 of his 18 outings.
Anaheim will counter with veteran righthander Kelvim Escobar (12-6, 2.74). The Venezuelan hurler, who ranks second in the American League in ERA, spent the first six years of his career with Toronto, serving as both a starter and a closer.
Since moving to the Angels in the 2004 season, Escobar owns a 2-3 record with a 2.12 ERA in five starts against his former team.
