Hamels looks to help Phillies take series from Nationals

Aug 16, 2007 - 2:35 PM Philadelphia (63-56) at Washington (55-65) 7:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- In the midst of a playoff race, the Philadelphia Phillies cannot afford to lose to the feisty Washington Nationals.

Cole Hamels takes the hill on Thursday looking to make sure that does not happen for a second straight time in the rubber game of a three-game series.

Tim Redding threw six solid innings and delivered a two-run double in the second as the Nationals posted a 4-2 win on Wednesday.

With the loss, the Phillies (63-56) fell into third place in the National League East, four games behind the New York Mets and one-half game in back of the Atlanta Braves (64-56).

Hamels (13-5, 3.64 ERA) will try and help them bounce back, as well as tie Chicago's Carlos Zambrano for the National League lead in wins. On Friday, the 23-year-old lefthander allowed four runs and five hits in seven innings in a 5-4 win over Atlanta.

Meanwhile, Washington has been playing well and hand the ball to rookie John Hanrahan (2-0, 2.76).

The 25-year-old righthander held the San Francisco Giants to one run and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 3-1 win on Thursday.

The Nationals are 19-13 since the All-Star break - the second-best mark in the NL behind the Phillies.
