Glavine looks to help Mets rebound from tough loss
Aug 17, 2007 - 1:45 PM NY Mets (67-53) at Washington (55-66) 7:05 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The New York Mets look to rebound from a tough loss when they visit the Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
New York lost after having a five-run lead for the first time since 2004 as the Pittsburgh Pirates took advantage of a pair of errors to post a 10-7 win in the finale on Thursday.
The Mets held leads of 5-0 and 7-3, but the Pirates tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the seventh. Third baseman David Wright's two-base error kept the eighth inning alive, and Freddy Sanchez came around to score the go-ahead run on a dropped throw at the plate after a single by Adam LaRoche.
With the loss, the Mets saw their lead over Philadelphia (64-56) trimmed to three games in the National League East.
Glavine (10-6, 4.25 ERA) will looks to help the Mets forget that terrible loss. The 41-year-old lefthander allowed two runs hits in 6 1/3 innings of a no-decision in a 7-5 loss to Florida. The future Hall of Famer is 9-4 with a 2.13 ERA in his last 15 starts against Washington.
Matt Chico (5-6, 4.85) takes the hill for Washington, which has the second-best record in the National League since the All-Star break at 19-14 and has won eight of its last 10 games here.
In his last start, Chico allowed four runs in five innings but did not factor into the decision in a 11-4 loss to Arizona on Friday.
