Tigers aim for consecutive wins vs. Yankees

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers will try for a repeat performance when they battle the New York Yankees in the second game of a four-game series on Friday.

In the Thursday's series opener, All-Star Carlos Guillen blasted a first-inning grand slam as the defending American League champion Tigers coasted to an 8-5 victory.

It was Guillen's second grand slam at Yankee Stadium. He also hit one here on August 7, 2000 off Denny Neagle while with the Seattle Mariners.

With that win, Detroit regained sole possession of first place in the AL Central over the Cleveland Indians by one-half game.

Detroit's Nate Robertson (7-9, 5.01 ERA) will be looking for a second straight win after after battling through 5 2/3 innings in an 11-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

It was the first win in four starts for the 29-year-old lefthander.

With the Tigers in the midst of fighting for positioning with the Indians, Robertson will have to be at his best in this one as he's just 1-4 with 4.46 ERA all-time against New York.

Andy Pettitte (9-7, 3.93) takes the ball for the Yankees, who fell one-half game behind the Seattle Mariners in the wild card chase due to Thursday's setback. The 35-year-old lefthander yielded two runs in 7 1/3 frames in a victory at the Indians on Sunday for his third straight win.

Pettitte is 9-8 over 21 lifetime starts against Detroit.
