Diamondbacks look to sweep Braves
Aug 19, 2007 - 1:25 PM Arizona (71-53) at Atlanta (64-59) 1:05 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks look to complete a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Micah Owings returned to his native Georgia and became the fifth pitcher in the last 50 years to drive in six runs during a game, notching four hits including two home runs as he led the Diamondbacks to a 12-6 triumph on Saturday.
The Diamondbacks have won 21 of their last 26 games to open a 4 1/2-game lead over San Diego (65-57) in the National League West.
After two stellar pitching performances from ace Brandon Webb and Owings, Arizona will hand the ball to Yusmeiro Petit (2-3, 4.04 ERA) on Sunday. Petit lost his last outing as he allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings in an 11-0 setback to San Diego.
Petit has faced the Braves once this season on July 27, allowing five runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings while not factoring in the decision.
John Smoltz (10-6, 3.09) will counter Petit when he takes the mound for the Braves. The veteran righthander is 0-1 in four starts since winning at San Francisco on July 23.
Smoltz did not factor in the decision in his lone start against Arizona this season. On July 28, he gave up three runs over seven innings against the Diamondbacks. He is 2-2 in 13 career appearances against them.
Atlanta is in third place in the NL East, 5 1/2 games back of the New York Mets (69-53).
