Giants look to extend recent road success
Aug 19, 2007 - 1:27 PM San Francisco (53-70) at Florida (56-67) 1:05 pm EDTMIAMI (Ticker) - After connecting on homer No. 760, Barry Bonds looks to extend the San Francisco Giants' season-high three-game road winning streak as they continue their four-game set against the Florida Marlins on Sunday.
Despite striking out three times in a game for the first time since June 18, 2006, Bonds increased the gap between him and former home run king Hank Aaron to five with his go-ahead, two-run homer off Rick VandenHurk in the fifth inning in Saturday's 4-3 win. However, his status for this game is questionable as Giants manager likes to rest Bonds when San Francisco has a day game following a night contest.
If he plays, Bonds will have to face Dontrelle Willis (8-12, 4.93), who looks for his second straight win after breaking a miserable stretch in which he lost nine consecutive decisions and endured a 13-start winless streak. Bond is just 1-for-6 with five walks against Willis.
After starting 7-3 through May 29, Willis went 0-8 in his next 13 before Tuesday's 14-5 win over Arizona in which he struck out a season-high 11, allowing three runs and 10 hits in the win. The lefthander is just 1-3 in seven lifetime starts against San Francisco with a 5.08 ERA.
Noah Lowry (13-7, 3.28) has been the exact opposite of his counterpart as he has won four straight decisions and seven of his last eight. He will look to become the fifth pitcher in the National League to reach the 14-win mark.
The lefthander's last win came in Monday's 10-3 triumph at Pittsburgh in the second game of a doubleheader when he yielded two runs and six hits over seven frames. The 26-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.47 ERA in four career starts against the Marlins.
