Sonnanstine, Lester square off when Devil Rays host Red Sox
Aug 21, 2007 - 1:46 PM Boston (75-50) at Tampa Bay (47-77) 7:10 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Andy Sonnanstine looks for his second straight win when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays host the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old righthander picked up a win in his second major league start on June 10 at Florida, then suffered through a stretch where he went 0-8 over 11 outings. He looked nothing like the pitcher who went 21-12 with a 2.66 ERA over 1 1/2 seasons in the minors.
But Sonnanstine (2-8, 6.17 ERA) put it all together last Wednesday against Boston, holding the powerful lineup to just two hits through six innings before surrendering three runs in the seventh. The strong performance earned him his second career win.
The Red Sox counter with Jon Lester (1-0, 5.14), who had his best start of the season on August 14 against the Devil Rays in his home debut. The 23-year-old lefthander allowed two hits and one run in seven innings at Fenway Park, but did not factor in the decision.
Boston picked up the win on Monday, getting to Devil Rays' ace Scott Kazmir for six runs en route to a 6-0 triumph. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield pitched seven strong innings to improve his career mark to 19-2 against Tampa Bay.
The Red Sox hold a five-game lead over the New York Yankees (70-55) in the American League East.
