Wainwright, Cards continue playoff push vs. Marlins

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - Adam Wainwright was the closer for the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals last season. Now he is trying to lead them back to the playoffs as a starter.

Wainwright, who has been St. Louis' ace, takes the mound on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series with the Florida Marlins.

Rick Ankiel homered for the fourth time in nine games and Albert Pujols homered for the third straight game as the Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of their division rival Chicago Cubs with a 6-4 win on Monday.

The game was played on Monday because Sunday's finale was rained out.

St. Louis was eight games out of first on August 5, but has won eight of 12 and is just three games behind Chicago (63-60) and Milwaukee (64-61) in the National League Central.

A big part of their recent success has been Wainwright (11-9,4.01 ERA), who is coming off one of his best outings of the season. The righthander, who leads the team in wins, allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings with a career-high eight strikeouts in a 8-0 win over Milwaukee on Thursday.

Rookie Daniel Barone (0-1, 6.23) takes the hill for Florida, which lost its fifth straight, 8-7, to San Francisco on Monday. In his second career start on Thursday, Barone allowed five runs and seven hits in four innings of a 5-4 loss to Arizona.
