Loaiza set to make his return when A's visit Blue Jays
Aug 22, 2007 - 1:12 PM Oakland (63-64) at Toronto (63-62) 12:37 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - The Oakland Athletics will welcome back Esteban Loaiza when they go for a sweep of their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
The A's have suffered numerous injuries in 2007, leading to a disappointing season. Ace starter Rich Harden and top-bullpen arms Huston Street and Justin Duchscherer joined Loaiza on the disabled list, and various position players followed.
But Loaiza (NR), who has not pitched this season due to spasms in his right trapezius muscle, will start against his former team on Wednesday. The veteran righthander, who played three seasons for the Blue Jays from 2000-2002, went 11-9 with a 4.89 ERA in 2006 and was slated as the No. 2 starter prior to the season.
He is 5-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 13 career games - 11 starts - against Toronto.
The Blue Jays counter with their own oft-injured hurler, A.J. Burnett (7-6, 4.01). The 30-year-old righthander spent a month and a half on the disabled list, from June 28 to August 12 with a right shoulder strain, his second stint on the DL this season.
Since his return, Burnett has allowed just three earned runs in 13 2/3 innings over a pair of starts, picking up wins in both.
Dan Haren overcame two homers by Frank Thomas on Tuesday, leading the Athletics to a 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays.
