Orioles look to recover from doubleheader shelling
Aug 23, 2007 - 1:07 PM Minnesota (63-63) at Baltimore (58-67) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - The same day that the Baltimore Orioles rewarded manager Dave Trembley by extending his contract, they were pummeled on both ends of a doubleheader. On Thursday, they hope to recover when they begin a four-game set with the Minnesota Twins.
The Orioles officially committed to Trembley on Wednesday for the 2008 season and then saw the Texas Rangers tally an American League-record 30 runs in the first game of their doubleheader followed by another nine runs in the nightcap.
They may be catching a break as Minnesota sends out Boof Bonser (5-10, 4.93 ERA), who is winless in his last 12 outings. Since his last win on June 10, he is 0-8 with a 5.65 ERA.
His latest setback was Saturday's 5-0 home loss to the Rangers when the righthander surrendered five runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. However, he has had success in his short career against Baltimore, going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in two starts.
If anyone can relate to Bonser's suffering, it may be Steve Trachsel (6-7, 4.81), who is aiming to win consecutive starts after breaking a nine-game winless streak with a 5-3 victory Saturday over Toronto in which he allowed three runs and eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.
The righthander, who has not opposed the Twins since 2004, is 2-2 with a 4.72 ERA in five career starts against Minnesota.
