Surging Pirates look for second straight series win
Aug 23, 2007 - 2:21 PM Pittsburgh (54-71) at Colorado (64-62) 3:05 pm EDTDENVER (Ticker) -- Heading out on the road has turned out to be a good thing for the the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates will look to win their second straight series when they finish up a four-game series at the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.
Freddy Sanchez, who has 12 RBI in his last six games, homered and knocked in three runs as Pittsburgh smashed a season-high six home runs in routing the Rockies, 11-2, on Wednesday.
It was the fourth win in the last five games for Pittsburgh, which has scored a major league-best 146 runs in August.
Despite leading the National League in losses, Paul Maholm (9-14, 4.53 ERA) will aim to win his third straight start.
After picking up a complete-game win against the San Francisco Giants on August 13, Maholm gave up six runs and 10 hits in his last start. However, he got plenty of run support, as the Pirates posted an 11-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
After taking two of three from the Phillies, a win on Thursday would give the Pirates consecutive series wins for the first time since July 2-8.
The Rockies will turn to Franklin Morales (0-0, 1.69), who will be looking to earn his first major league win. The 21-year-old lefthander made his major league debut on Saturday, surrendering just one run and five hits over 5 1/3 innings but did not figure in a 7-4 extra-inning win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies, who sit 3 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres in the NL West, have dropped five of their last seven games.
