Athletics look to stay hot against Devil Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics will look to win a season-high sixth straight game when they continue a four-game series with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Friday.

The Athletics routed the Devil Rays, 12-2, in Thursday's opener to move above .500 for the first time since July 7 when they had a 44-43 record. Oakland has won nine of its last 11 games and 16 of its last 22.

Lenny DiNardo (8-6, 3.13) will look to extend the win streak when he toes the rubber for the A's. DiNardo is 5-0 over his previous seven starts, posting a 3.67 ERA over that span.

In his last start, the 27-year-old lefthander dominated the Kansas City Royals, allowing just one run and five hits over eight innings on Sunday.

While Oakland is on fire, the Devil Rays are ice cold. With Thursday's loss, Tampa Bay fell to a season-low 31 games below .500.

James Shields (9-8, 4.18) will try to get the Devil Rays a win when he takes the mound. Shields has had a solid season despite Tampa Bay's woes, as the righthander is on pace to become the first Tampa Bay pitcher since Tanyon Sturtze in 2002 to log 200 innings. He is sixth in the American League with 154 strikeouts.

Shields did not factor in the decision during his last start despite allowing just two runs over six innings as the Devil Rays beat the American League Central leaders, the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, in 12 innings on Sunday.
