Tigers, Yankees look for short night after long Friday

DETROIT (Ticker) - After a long night, the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees continue a four-game series Saturday.

In a game that ended 8 hours, 25 minutes after it was scheduled to begin, Carlos Guillen belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving Detroit a 9-6 win on Friday.

Detroit moved within 1 1/2 games of Cleveland (70-57) in the American League Central. Meanwhile, New York fell 6 1/2 games back of Boston (78-51) in the AL East and three games behind Seattle (73-53) in thew wild card race.

The Tigers send struggling Jeremy Bonderman (10-6, 4.65 ERA) to the mound. The righthander is 0-5 over his last seven starts dating to July 13.

On Sunday, Bonderman gave up four runs and seven hits over six innings in a 9-3 loss to the Yankees. He is just 2-5 lifetime against New York.

New York counters with Chien-Ming Wang (14-6, 4.10), who held the Tigers to three runs with six strikeouts through six frames when he opposed Bonderman on Sunday. Against Detroit, the 27-year-old has managed a 4-0 record with a 2.90 ERA in five career starts.

Since June 1, Wang has posted an impressive 11-2 record.
