Wright, Mets look to continue offensive success vs. Dodgers
Aug 25, 2007 - 2:31 PM La Dodgers (66-62) at Ny Mets (72-55) 3:55 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - David Wright and the New York Mets look to continue to demonstrate their offensive exploits as they continue a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
Wright homered and drove in a pair of runs and Oliver Perez threw seven outstanding innings as New York posted a 5-2 victory in the opener.
Wright has been a key cog in a Mets' offense that has scored five runs or more in a franchise-best 12 straight games. The 24-year-old is hitting .428 (15-for-35) with a homer and nine RBI in his last 10 games.
As a result of their offensive prowess, the Mets (72-55) have won eight of 11 and have opened up a season-high six-game lead over the second place team in the National League. The Philadelphia Phillies (66-61) and the Atlanta Braves (67-62) are tied for second.
Orlando Hernandez (8-4, 3.09 ERA) has also been a big reason for their recent success. New York has won eight straight games with Hernandez on the mound, and the 37-year-old righthander is 4-0 with a 2.91 ERA in that span. On Sunday, Hernandez allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings of an 8-2 win over Washington.
Lefthander Eric Stultz (1-1, 3.91) takes the mound for Los Angeles, which is 3 1/2 games behind the San Diego Padres (69-58) in the wild card race. Stultz, who is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA since being inserted into the rotation, allowed two runs and two hits, with a career-high nine strikeouts in a 6-4 win over Colorado on Friday.
