Fielder-less Brewers turn to young Gallardo vs. Giants
Aug 25, 2007 - 2:44 PM Milwaukee (65-63) at San Francisco (57-72) 9:05 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) - Even though they were thankful to see Prince Fielder's suspension reduced by one game on Friday, the Brewers could not benefit on the field. They get another chance on Saturday as their slugger sits out the second and final game of his punishment when they meet the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.
Fielder, who leads the National League with a career-high 39 homers, originally was suspended three games for arguing a call with home plate umpire Wally Bell on August 12 in a game against Houston.
Despite scoring three first-inning runs, the Brewers were unable to make it stand as the Giants answered with six runs of their own, eventually cruising to an 11-6 victory on Friday. One of the bigger highlights in the contest was Barry Bonds' 761st career home run - a solo blast in the fourth inning.
With the seven-time National League MVP expected to be in the lineup, he will face rookie Yovani Gallardo (5-3, 4.41 ERA), who will make his first career start against San Francisco, trying to avoid becoming Bonds' 449th home run victim. In Monday's 9-0 win over the Diamondbacks, the 21-year-old yielded just five hits and struck out six over six frames.
His counterpart on the mound will be Kevin Correia (1-6, 3.90), who will be making his second start of the season in place of Russ Ortiz. Ortiz, who is on the disabled list with a torn flexor tendon in his right arm, has appeared 51 times out of the bullpen this season.
He has made two relief appearances since starting for the first time since 2005 on August 14 when he did not receive a decision after permitting four hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings in a 5-4 loss to Atlanta.
Overall, the righthander has made eight appearances - one start - against the Brewers. Correia has yet to receive a decision with a 3.95 ERA.
