Wells makes first start as Dodger vs. Mets

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - David Wells has been given another chance, but it comes against a hot New York Mets team on Sunday.

Wells will make his first start as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Mets.

Orlando Hernandez threw seven solid innings and Carlos Delgado snapped out of an 0-for-19 slump with a pair of RBI as New York posted a 4-3 win on Saturday.

Wells (5-8, 5.54 ERA) was designated for assignment by the San Diego Padres more than two weeks ago. Los Angeles signed the 44-year-old lefthander for the rest of the season on Friday after he cleared waivers.

Wells was released by San Diego because he had allowed 27 runs over his last 16 2/3 innings. Now the southpaw, who last started on August 6, faces a Mets team that has won nine of 12 and scored five or more runs in 12 of their last 13 games.

John Maine (13-7, 3.64) takes the mound for New York, which holds a seven-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies (66-62) and Atlanta Braves (67-63) in the National League East.

Maine, who has just one win in his last four starts, allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings against San Diego on Tuesday, but did not factor into the decision of a 7-6 win.
