Soriano returns as Cubs face Brewers in NL Central showdown

Aug 28, 2007 - 1:21 PM Milwaukee (65-65) at Chicago Cubs (66-63) 8:05 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs have to be ecstatic that Alfonso Soriano is set to return on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series with their divisional rival, the Milwaukee Brewers.

Soriano, who has been on the disabled list since suffering a strained right quadriceps on August 5, is tied for the team lead in home runs with 18. The Cubs were one of the hottest teams in baseball with Soriano prior to his injury, but they've lost 11 of 19 without him.

While the Cubs have struggled, the Brewers (65-65) have been even worse, posting a major league-worst 7-16 record in August.

Chicago leads the Milwaukee by 1 1/2 games in the National League Central.

Rich Hill (7-7, 3.67 ERA) is hoping the return of Soriano will help give him much-needed run support. Hill has allowed three runs or less in seven of his last eight starts, but has just one win in that span.

Meanwhile, Jeff Suppan (8-11, 4.85) takes the hill for Milwaukee, looking for his first win in his last 11 starts. Suppan, who is 0-4 with a 4.76 ERA that span, allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings of a 3-2 loss to Arizona on Wednesday.

Milwaukee has lost four straight and 11 of its last 15 games on the road.
