Maddux gets start in critical game vs. Diamondbacks
Aug 29, 2007 - 3:11 PM Arizona (74-59) at San Diego (72-59) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux will look to continue to pad his Hall of Fame numbers when the San Diego Padres host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third game of a critical four-game series Wednesday.
Maddux (10-9, 3.90 ERA) has won each of his last three starts, reaching double digits in wins for the 20th consecutive season, tying Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan and moving a season shy of Don Sutton's all-time mark.
If Maddux can continue his strong performance, the Padres will move into a tie with the Diamondbacks atop the National League West standings.
San Diego sliced its deficit to one game after beating reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb with a 6-4 victory on Tuesday. Mike Cameron ignited a four-run sixth inning with a leadoff homer.
Arizona will counter with Micah Owings (6-7, 4.69), who has lost six of his last seven decisions. The 25-year-old rookie surrendered three runs and seven hits in six innings of a 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs in his last start on Friday.
Owings pitched well in his only previous meeting with the Padres, yielding a run and four innings in six innings but did not figure in a 9-5 win on August 1.
The Diamondbacks have lost six of their last eight contests.
