Kazmir, Devil Rays eye sweep of reeling Orioles
Aug 30, 2007 - 1:37 PM Tampa Bay (53-80) at Baltimore (58-73), 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) - For teams that have two bad records, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Baltimore Orioles seem to be going in opposite directions.
Scott Kazmir and the Devil Rays will try for a sweep of the Orioles on Thursday.
Tampa Bay defeated Baltimore, 5-4, in 12 innings to win its second straight game against the Orioles, gaining its first road series win in 12 attempts. It also marked the first time since 2004 that the Devil Rays had won two consecutive contests against the Orioles.
Kazmir (10-8, 3.64 ERA) toes the rubber for Tampa Bay, seeking his sixth win in his last eight decisions. The 23-year-old lefthander was impressive in his last start, allowing three runs and five hits in eight innings in a 14-3 blowout win against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
Kazmir is 1-1 in three starts against Baltimore in 2007, including a 9-2 victory over the Orioles on August 4. In that contest, the young four-year veteran allowed a run and seven hits while striking out nine in seven innings.
Baltimore counters with Jeremy Guthrie (7-4, 3.46), who is 0-1 in his five previous August starts. The Orioles are 0-5 in those starts and have lost eight straight games going into Thursday's contest.
Guthrie has faced the Devil Rays once this year, allowing just a run and six hits in six innings in an 8-3 win on May 8.
