Correia, Giants try to stay hot, open series with Nationals

Aug 31, 2007 - 2:57 PM San Francisco (61-73) at Washington (58-76) 7:05 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - Despite the expected absence of Barry Bonds, Kevin Correia and the San Francisco Giants will try to stay hot.

Correia and the Giants look for their seventh win in eight games when they open a three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Friday.

San Francisco had won six straight contests before being shut out by the Colorado Rockies, 8-0, on Wednesday. Bonds went 0-for-2 in the contest before being lifted in the seventh inning.

The all-time home run king is not expected to be in the lineup on Friday when Correia (2-6, 3.84 ERA) takes the mound looking to continue his solid work as a starter.

The righthander, who had been used primarily as a reliever until recently, is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts in 2007. Correia earned his first win as a starter on Saturday, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Nationals, who have lost their last six games to fall into a tie for last place in the National League East, counters with Tim Redding (3-4, 3.10).

Redding is coming off his worst start of the season, giving up five runs and six hits - two homers - in four innings in a 5-1 loss at Colorado on Saturday.

Washington, which split a four-game series with San Francisco on the road earlier this season, swept the Giants in a three-game set here in 2006.
