Cardinals look for rare win with Reyes on mound
Aug 31, 2007 - 3:15 PM Cincinnati (62-72) at St Louis (64-66) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - The St. Louis Cardinals need to find a way to win with Anthony Reyes on the mound if they are going to stay in the National League Central race.
Reyes takes the hill as St. Louis opens a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
The Cardinals trail the Milwaukee Brewers (66-67) by one-half game and the first place Chicago Cubs (68-64) by 3 1/2 games after losing two of three to the Houston Astros.
Things won't be any easier against the Reds, especially considering their record with Reyes on the mound. St. Louis has lost 15 of Reyes' last 18 starts, and will be facing a Cincinnati team that has won eight of 10.
Reyes (2-13, 5.33 ERA) allowed four unearned runs and three hits in five innings of an 11-3 loss to Florida on Thursday.
Tom Shearn (1-0, 3.86) makes his second-career start for Cincinnati. Shearn, who was called up from Class AAA Louisville on Sunday. Shearn started that day and allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings of a 9-3 win over Florida.
