Mariners look to end seven-game slide
Sep 1, 2007 - 2:22 PM Seattle (68-66) at Toronto (73-60) 1:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - The Seattle Mariners need Miguel Batista to work some magic.
Batista gets the call as the Mariners look to snap their season high-tying seven-game losing streak when they continue a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
The righthanded Batista (13-10, 4.74 ERA) has been knocked around in his last two starts, giving up 14 runs and 19 hits in consecutive setbacks to the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - his worst stretch of the season.
Batista is 3-2 with a lowly 1.59 ERA in five lifetime outings against the Blue Jays, who were limited to one run and five hits on June 30 by the 36 year old.
Seattle's Jarrod Washburn gave up three homers in the first four innings of Friday's series opening loss. Despite the setback, the Mariners remained one game behind of the New York Yankees in the American League wild card.
Toronto will turn to Dustin McGowan (8-8, 4.18), who is winless over his last four starts. On Sunday, the righthander gave up three runs and six hits in seven frames in a 3-1 loss at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In his last start vs. Seattle, McGowan allowed five runs in five innings during a 5-3 loss at Safeco Field on June 29.
