Peavy, Lowe face off as Padres meet Dodgers

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy looks to continue his push for the National League Cy Young Award.

Peavy takes the mound as the Padres host intrastate rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the second game of a weekend series on Saturday.

Peavy (15-5, 2.18 ERA) has been on a roll, going 6-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his last seven outings. The hard-throwing righthander has allowed just 26 hits in 46 2/3 innings with 61 strikeouts during this run.

In his last start, Peavy dazzled through seven innings to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday. The 26-year-old has fanned 11 batters over three straight games. Peavy is 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA in 16 career starts in this series, winning his previous five outings.

Josh Bard drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning single, snapping a 3-3 tie and leading San Diego to its eighth win in 10 games with Friday's series-opening win. The Padres are tied with Arizona (75-61) atop the National League West.

The Dodgers send Derek Lowe (11-11, 3.56) to the hill. Lowe is seeking his fourth consecutive winning decision after beating the Washington Nationals, 5-4, on Monday.

The 6-6 righthander is 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 11 lifetime starts against San Diego, which has defeated Lowe twice in five career outings at Petco Park despite his 2.20 ERA.
