Indians, White Sox headed in opposite directions

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - Two teams headed in opposite directions in the American League standings face off when the Chicago White Sox face the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.

The leader in the AL Central, the Indians extended their current winning streak to seven games on Friday, scoring six runs in the eighth inning to come from behind for an 8-5 win.

Cleveland holds a 5 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers (72-63) in the Central heading into the final month of the regular season.

The White Sox have dropped eight of their last nine games and are 4-16 in their last 20. Chicago has lost 10 consecutive road games for the first time since the beginning of the 1977 campaign.

A winner in his last three starts, Paul Byrd (13-5, 4.43 ERA) will look to carry the momentum for the Indians. Byrd has allowed seven earned runs in 17 1/3 innings over his personal winning streak.

The 36-year-old righthander is 6-1 in his last eight starts since not factoring into the decision against Chicago on July 17. Byrd is coming off an 8-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.

Javier Vazquez (11-7, 3.89) will look to get the White Sox back on track when he takes the mound. Vazquez was roughed up in his last start, giving up seven runs and six hits - including three home runs - in Sunday's 11-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

For his career, Vazquez is 4-2 with a 4.05 ERA in nine starts against Cleveland.
