After no-hitter, Red Sox look to close out Orioles
Sep 2, 2007 - 2:24 PM Baltimore (59-75) at Boston (81-55), 2:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox will look to ride the momentum of rookie Clay Buchholz's no-hitter into Sunday when they wrap up their three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.
Buchholz joined Wilson Alvarez as the only other pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his second major league start as the Red Sox routed the Orioles, 10-0, on Saturday. The 23-year-old righthander was the first Red Sox rookie to accomplish the feat and first pitcher since Derek Lowe in 2002 to throw a no-hitter for Boston.
The Red Sox remain five games in front of the New York Yankees (76-60) in the American League East Division.
Jon Lester (2-0, 5.67 ERA) will start for the Red Sox after returning from a short stint for Class AA Portland. Lester won his last start, 8-6, on August 21, over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. However, the lefthander struggled with his control, allowing five runs on four hits while walking four in 5 1/3 innings.
Daniel Cabrera (9-13, 5.08), who is on pace to lead the majors in walks for a second consecutive season, will toe the rubber for the Orioles.
Cabrera struggled with his control again in his last start, walking four over six innings, but pitched well enough to win. The 26-year-old righthander allowed three runs on five hits, but did not factor in the decision, as Baltimore lost, 15-8, to the Devil Rays on Tuesday.
