Westbrook hopes August success continues into September
Sep 2, 2007 - 2:31 PM Chi White Sox (57-79) at Cleveland (78-57), 1:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - Jake Westbrook had an outstanding August. He'll look to start September off on the right foot as the Cleveland Indians aim for a three-game sweep of the lowly Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Westbrook went 4-1 with a 1.90 ERA in six starts in August, and has been a key reason the Indians have won eight straight.
Casey Blake and Travis Hafner each drove in a pair of runs and Paul Byrd threw a four-hitter in a 7-0 victory on Saturday. Franklin Gutierrez and Kelly Shoppach homered as the Indians matched their longest winning streak since a nine-game stretch in 2005.
Westbrook (5-7, 4.38 ERA) will try and help the Indians maintain their 5 1/2-game lead over the Detroit Tigers (73-63) in the American League Central. In his last outing, Westbrook wasn't particularly sharp, but still won. The righthander allowed three runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-5 win over Minnesota on Tuesday.
The Indians should have no problem with the floundering White Sox, who have lost 10 of 11, including 11 straight on the road.
Jose Contreras (7-16,6.13) takes the hill looking for his second straight win. On Monday, Contreras won for the first time in 10 starts by allowing four runs and eight hits in seven innings of a 5-4 win over Tampa Bay.
