Suppan looks to snap winless streak vs. Pirates
Sep 2, 2007 - 2:32 PM Pittsburgh (59-76) at Milwaukee (68-67) 2:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - Jeff Suppan hopes the Milwaukee Brewers' outstanding home record can help him earn his first win in over two months.
Suppan takes the hill as the Brewers aim for a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Johnny Estrada and Bill Hall each drove in a pair of runs in a five-run second inning as Milwaukee cruised to a 12-3 victory on Saturday.
The Brewers, who are a major league-best 41-25 at home, have won two straight games after dropping five in a row. They now trail the Chicago Cubs by 1 1/2 games in the National League Central.
Suppan (8-11, 4.78 ERA) pitched well in his last outing but, like the last two months, had nothing to show for it. The righthander allowed two runs and six hits in six innings of a 5-3 loss to Chicago on Tuesday. Suppan has not won since June 22 - a span of 12 starts.
Suppan could break through against the Pirates. He is 9-3 with a 3.17 ERA in 17 starts against them, and 7-0 with a 2.45 ERA in eight home starts vs. Jim Tracy's club.
Tom Gorzelanny (13-7, 3.50) takes the hill for Pittsburgh, which has lost four straight games.
Gorzelanny could put that streak to an end with another solid outing. The 24-year-old lefthander has won two straight outings and four of his last five. On Tuesday, Gorzelanny allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
