Ankiel and Cardinals aim for sweep of Reds
Sep 2, 2007 - 2:38 PM Cincinnati (62-74) at St Louis (66-66) 2:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) - Rick Ankiel looks to continue his hot hitting and lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.
Ankiel, who hit his first career grand slam on Friday, drove in three more runs and Yadier Molina homered as the Cardinals posted an 11-3 victory on Saturday.
The Cardinals (66-66), who have won eight of their last 12 games, are one-half game behind the Milwaukee Brewers (68-67) and two games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs (69-65) in the National League Central.
Ankiel has been a key reason for St. Louis' success, hitting .481 (13-for-27) with nine RBI in his last six games.
Braden Looper (11-10, 4.66 ERA), who has pitched at least six innings in each of his last five starts, looks to draw the Cardinals closer to the Cubs. On Tuesday, Looper held the Houston Astros to four hits in seven strong innings of a 7-0 win.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati, which lost for just the third time in its last 11 games, sends Bronson Arroyo (7-13, 4.44) to the mound. Arroyo allowed one run and six hits in six innings, but did not factor into in a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.
