Cardinals aim to gain ground in NL postseason race
Sep 4, 2007 - 2:29 PM Pittsburgh (60-77) at St Louis (67-67) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals missed a grand opportunity to make up some ground in the National League Central Division on Monday. They hope to get another shot on Tuesday when they continue their four-game series on Tuesday.
Fortunately for the Cardinals, both teams in front of them in the standings - the division-leading Chicago Cubs (70-66) and second-place Milwaukee Brewers (69-68) - lost on Monday.
Joel Pineiro (3-2, 3.71 ERA) takes the mound Tuesday looking to snap a two-start drought without a win. The righthander took loss against Houston on Thursday despite allowing just two runs and five hits over six frames.
In his only other lifetime appearance against the Pirates in 2004, Pineiro yielded only one run and four hits over eight innings to get the win.
Matt Morris (8-8, 4.41) will look for his first career win against the team he spent the first eight seasons of his career with on Tuesday. In Thursday's 5-4 loss versus Cincinnati, he surrendered three runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Pittsburgh snapped a five-game skid with an 11-0 triumph in Monday's series opener.
Jack Wilson had four hits - including a homer - and three RBI while Ian Snell tossed seven outstanding innings for the Pirates, who improved to 5-7 this season against the Cardinals.
