Davis looks to continue second-half success vs. Padres

Sep 4, 2007 - 2:50 PM San Diego (76-61) at Arizona (76-63) 9:40 pm EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- A start from the red-hot Doug Davis might be just what the doctor ordered for the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks.

Davis takes the hill Tuesday when the Diamondbacks continue to battle the San Diego Padres for first place in the National League West Division.

Davis (12-11, 4.09 ERA) has been among the best pitchers in the NL since the All-Star break. The lefthander's seven wins since the break tie him with San Diego's Jake Peavy, Colorado's Jeff Francis and Atlanta's Tim Hudson for the league lead.

On Thursday, Davis improved to 2-0 against the Padres this season, allowing three runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings of an 8-7 win. The nine-year veteran, who is 3-1 in his last six starts against San Diego, is looking for his career-high 13th win.

Having lost 10 of their last 15 games, the Diamondbacks sorely need Davis to continue his stellar second half. Rookie Micah Owings struggled Monday, allowing four home runs in three innings of a 10-2 loss as Arizona fell one game behind San Diego.

The Diamondbacks hold a three-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers (72-65) and the Philadelphia Phillies (72-65) in the wild card race.

Chris Young (9-5, 2.38) gets the ball for the Padres, who tied a season high with five home runs in Monday's rout. Young opposed Davis the last time the two teams met and struggled mightily, allowing a season-high six walks and allowed five runs.

Young is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in three starts against Arizona this season.
