Streaking Mets aim for second straight sweep
Sep 5, 2007 - 2:21 PM NY Mets (78-60) at Cincinnati (62-77) 12:35 pm EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) - A week ago, the New York Mets were floundering. Now they are looking for their second consecutive sweep. What a difference seven days makes.
John Maine takes the mound as the Mets aim for a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds and extend their season-high winning streak to six games on Wednesday.
Paul Lo Duca hit a pair of three-run homers and drove in a career-high seven runs as New York posted an 11-7 victory on Tuesday. The Mets lead the Philadelphia Phillies (73-65) by five games in the National League East.
New York had absorbed a season-high five straight losses after an embarrassing four-game sweep at the hands of Philadelphia last week, but responded by sweeping Atlanta on the road and winning the first two games of this series.
To continue its solid play, the Mets turns to Maine (14-8, 3.57 ERA), who is one of the major leagues' best road pitchers.
The 26-year-old righthander is looking to tie Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's John Lackey for the league lead in road wins with 10. Aiming for his third straight road win, Maine is 9-2 with a 3.24 ERA in 13 starts away from Shea Stadium.
In his last start, Maine beat the Braves, 7-1, on Friday. He allowed a run and three hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings.
Cincinnati, which has lost a season high-tying sixth straight games, sends 30-year-old rookie Tom Shearn to the mound. Shearn (1-0, 4.76) is making just his third career start.
The journeyman righthander beat the Florida Marlins in his major league debut on August 26, allowing three runs and four hits in seven innings.
