Sheffield returns to help Tigers' wild card chances

Sep 6, 2007 - 1:40 PM Chi White Sox (59-80) at Detroit (74-65) 1:05 pm EDT

DETROIT (Ticker) - A horrible second half has the defending American League champion Detroit Tigers resigned to chasing the wild card. The return of a big bat to the middle of the lineup should help their chances.

Gary Sheffield returns from the disabled list as the Tigers try and take the rubber game of a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.

Detroit (74-65), which was tied with Boston for the majors' best record on July 24, is seven games back of the Cleveland Indians (81-58) in the AL Central. A more realistic goal is the wild card, in which it trails the New York Yankees (78-62) by 3 1/2 games.

Sheffield, who has been out since August 21 with a shoulder injury, had 24 home runs and 71 RBI in 101 games before the injury.

His return will bolster a lineup that has scored just three runs in the first two games of this series. On Wednesday, Kenny Rogers returned from the DL and threw five solid innings and Timo Perez hit a game-winning single in the 11th for a 2-1 win.

Chad Durbin (8-6, 4.76 ERA) will make his first start for the Tigers since August 18, filling in for injured rookie Jair Jurrjens. The righthander is just 2-6 with a 8.68 ERA in 11 career starts against Chicago.

The White Sox will counter with Mark Buehrle (9-9, 3.47), who is winless in his last five starts.

Buehrle allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings, but did not factor into the decision in an 8-5 loss to Cleveland on Friday.

Chicago has won seven of its last nine games against Detroit.
