Tigers, Mariners open critical weekend series

DETROIT (Ticker) - Justin Verlander takes the mound for the Detroit Tigers in the opener of an important weekend series against the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

Verlander (15-5, 3.67 ERA) looks to continue his late push for the AL Cy Young Award after two stellar outings. On Saturday, the hard-throwing righthander yielded one run in 6 2/3 innings for a 6-1 win at Oakland.

After a dismal stretch from July 21-August 6, the 24-year-old has been outstanding, winning four of his last five starts to help the Tigers remain three games behind the New York Yankees (78-62) in the wild card chase.

Verlander is 3-0 with 3.26 ERA three career starts against the Mariners. He limited Seattle to four runs through seven frames in a win on July 15 at Safeco Field.

Miguel Batista (13-10, 4.59) counters for the Mariners, who are also three games behind the Yankees. In his last start, Batista allowed one run and five hits with seven strikeouts but did not figure into the decision at Toronto.

The Dominican righthander defeated the AL defending champion Tigers on July 14, holding them to one run in six innings to pick up his first career win in the series.
